    volume and intensity question

how many sets and reps should i be doing if i am working at a high intensity? for example, for my chest workout:

    incline dumbell
    3 sets of 6-8 reps
if i get to 8 reps, i can increase the weight

    flat dumbell press
    3 sets of 8-10 reps
get to 10 reps, increase weight

    dumbell flys
    3 sets of 8-10 reps
get to 10 reps increase weight

should i lower my reps even further if im doing only 9 sets?

ALL sets taken to failure. ive just had a big confusion between low volume training and intensity levels. if i were doing a higher volume routine, would the cumulative fatigue method be the best?

why take all sets to failure?

6-8 reps is more of a moderate intensity then a high one.

i thought if you use low volume, you can take alot of the sets till failure..maybe from now on ill take only the last sets of each exercise to failure. then each of the other sets i stop 1 or 2 short of failure? ive been having problems lately gaining strength..then again i have been training each set to failure..so maybe i should only take a couple sets to failure

maybe you should only take the last set of your main exercise to failure! Or, only max out once every 3 or 4 workouts. Play it conservative and build your strength in strides rather then trying to blow it out all the time.

Failure training is a tool. It should only be used on occasion, or implemented into a periodization scheme properly.
