    Dave Tate on Hypertrophy

    Part I
    Part II

Dave Tate talks about hypertrophy, goes on a rant, and does some pimping of EliteFTS stuff. As always, good stuff from this man.

    Great article, my favorite line:

Everyone wants to major in the minor shit. A lot of people love training calves because it's easy. Compare a calf raise to a bent-over row. Which one is the pussy going to choose? It makes me sick to see how most people train today.

to increase resistance as the bar moves towards loackout. In a strength curve, yuo bring the bar off the chest, hit the sticking point which is the hardest part of the lift and then once you get through that sticking point the lockout is easier. With the changes, as he moves through the sticking point it gets harder and harder so as he gets stronger moving through his ROM the weight gets heavier.

Actually, Mr T is under there and he just hung them on the bar ends.

Actually, it allows you to express power for a longer period of time. The problem with trying to bench for power is that you have to slow the bar down at the top of the movement, effectively limiting the amount of time you can express power through the movement. Using chains, you can express power thru a later point in time in the movement.

So, when the bar is at the bottom of the movement, the chains provide little resistance because they are on the ground. As you move the bar up, the chains come off the ground and add more weight. Since the chains are adding more weight, they are actually decelerating the bar, not you, allowing you to express power for a longer period of time.

I would like to take credit for this knowledge, but I got it from the Strength Training and Conditioning Journal while making deuce. It is a very good read. It was the last issue and it has a 5 or so page article on developing power for the upper body. They argue that there is little actual training of power in teh upper body since you almost always have to decelerate the bar.
If sense were common, everyone would have it.

T-Nation: I hear a lot of people on our forum talking about moving to the home gym option. Why are so many hardcore lifters dumping commercial gyms?

Tate: The number one reason people put gyms in their house is they're sick of the bullshit. They're sick of going in there and having to listen to Celine Dion. They're sick of watching people ride their stupid Life Cycles while watching TV.

Every time they step into their gym it's some new bullshit, like they've got Christmas decorations up. They just want to go in, bust their ass, and train hard. You can't put a price on that. With a home gym, all you have to do is find some training partners.
