    Important question about recovery

I have been working one body part a week the last several months and have made great gains after a plateau on everything. So now my question is about recovery.

Yesterday I had a great shoulder workout and worked out my triceps as well. Today I am very sore. Now I would like to work out my legs today. Is it better to rest today and do legs tomorrow, or go ahead and hit them tonight. The reason I am asking this is: Wouldn't it be better to let my upper body recover from my food and protein I am taking today? Would it be detrimental to hit legs and force my body to repair more muscle? Even though they are completely seperate muscle groups, I am curious to know if this could be possible overtraining?

If your energy level is high enough, then yes, go train.

If you are so sore that you feel like you won't be able to give 100% and not have a productive workout, then no, don't go, and give it one more day.

Think of your body as a whole system that is being trained.

I believe that the CNS needs a day to recover even if you are working a different muscle group. I do not know this for a fact, but I seem to have made better gains when I do a Mon/Wed/Fri/Sun split, starting the next week off on a Tue/Thu/Sat split.

Many people have had great success with two on, one off, two on, one off, etc. splits. It is not necessary to have the extra rest between working out. Since probably none of the same movements are involved when you do triceps and shoulders as compared to legs, you should be just fine, but it's up to you.

I train muscles while they are sore oftentimes. I don't believe in the single-factor theory, which basically states you have to allow for full recovery after every resistance training session. You can accumilate damage/fatigue over a period of time and then go through a healing phase.
