i know little to nothing about it but have met a bunch of PLers on other sites that train this way and swear by it.
Who has tried this and with what results??????Do you really believe this builds funcational strength or just a bunch of Hype.
I currently play around with a 2" fatbar,a Keg and a sandbag.I have seen some good results in grip strength in using the fat bar for my pulling excercises. The Keg and sandbag are just for fun.

Of course it builds functional strength. After all, the functional part is lifting everyday, strange objects.
Of course, that's not to say that lifting weights in the conventional way won't build functional strength either.

It's definitely going to add to your grip strength because you are dealing with objects that have no defined hand hold, or in the case of the fat bar, a hand hold which is harder to grip properly.
It's also going to improve core strength on a lot of levels. Using amorphous solids to perform resistance training exercises is going to require you to stabilize on all planes of motion to a much larger degree than your standard compound lifts.
I deem a stable core and strong grip some of the most functional abilities one can posses.
You can also think about it like this: how often are you dealing with objects that are as convenient and non-cumbersome as a barbell or dumbbell?
The only time it's bad to feel the burn is when you're peeing...
