For two days a week a Upper body-Lower body split may work nice. I wouldnt worry about avoiding certain exercises.
i wonder if anyone can help - my girlfriends started to exercise to get 'tonned' for our holiday and i said id look into resistance training for her. she is very slim but is adament she wants to get more 'tonned' and 'athletic' (i just think if she wants to exercise it aint a bad thing for anyone so i said id ask you guys for any advice)
her current 'regime' goes like this:
MON : Swim
TUE :Aerobics
WED : Swim
THU : Yoga
FRI :
SAT :
SUN :
as you can see she has fri,sat and sun free. could she be doing some light weight lifting on maybe fri and sat? what would be best - whole body (as its only 2 sessions a week?) i have assured her that she dosnt have the testostorone to 'bulk up' so i think she's coming round to the idea.
is there any major exercises she should do/avoid or can it look similar to a mens whole body workout?
thanks

thanks - is that going to be enough though - hitting the muscles just once a week? she wont be going heavy so i didnt know if once a week was enough? i might be wrong - do you know what rep range she should be aiming for? thanks
Go heavy... why weight lift if you aren't going heavy?

Basically, have your girlfried do all that cardio and train with very litle intensity and be skinny fat. Or, have her train with the proper intensity and she will get the physique that she wants. Simple physiology! high reps don't tone or or get you cut up.

thanks for the advice - what do you think about upper/lower split or whole of body though?
Myk - thats looks a great routine but i think id be worn out never mind her!
If she is going to be lifting 2 days out of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday I would say do Upper/Lower split.
For example Friday: Chest, back, maybe some direct arm work
Sunday: Quads and Hams

muscles grow and shrink, they do not 'tone'.

how bout she cuts out some aerobics, swimming or yoga and trains on M/W/F or T/Th/Sa and works those other things around lifting? thank goodness she's not under the impression that she will bulk up but now you've got to get her in the mindset that lifting heavy will do more for her physique than all of those other appointments on her schedule. a three day full body split would be best for her to start IMO.Originally Posted by steel

Yeah, I know it sounds bad, but a cardio bunny is definately better than a girl who doesn't work out at all and/or just starves herself to lose weight. You know the type: yogurt for breakfast, salad and grapefruit for lunch, a modest dinner... Nothing sadder than sitting next to a pretty girl in lecture, only to hear her stomach growl.Originally Posted by The13ig13adWolf
I have been telling my girlfriend that there is nothing hotter than a girl who lifts weights. I have also been tweaking her diet, which seems to be good, minus the fact that she is still on the 3-meal thing instead of 5-6. I'm taking her out this weekend to meet my friend Maria who is a healthnut and has the most amazing body. I was also going to show her your pics (The13ig13adWolf) to convince her that the "I don't want to get bulky" thing is a myth. I don't know why every single girl thinks this. It really doesn't help that she will ask her friends about my diet and training advice and they will tell her the exact opposite ("no don't drink protein shakes, they will make you fat," "duh, lift weights and you'll look bulky and manish," "no, that is only true for guys not girls"). I would love for her to have a body like yours, but I doubt she is willing to put down the gym time for it. We have different priorities. No need for me to be a prick about it and keep pushing. She can do what she wants. Health is my hobby, she has her own.
Definitely. You can't really criticize a person for being active, at least she is interested in fitness and doesn't sit on her ass all week. Though if she could be convinced to start lifting, that would be great for her.Originally Posted by KentDog
