A sandbag. It's portable, cheap, and can build muscle in many ways.

    Boo for Bowflex.

get a gold's gym membership. your travel pass fits in your wallet and supplies you will several thousand pounds of weights. its good for seven visits in any city you happen to be in.

there is nothing that you can fit in a travel bag that will give you a good workout other than a phone number to an escort service. those girls can go all night. but be careful, they charge by the hour.

    I disagree.

Why do you need a gym to get a good workout? Why even barbells and plates? I'm sure a lot of you know that I'm a little unconventional with my training techniques, to say the least. And that's all right. All weights really are is a form of resistance, correct? So, what does it matter what shape or form the resistance is in so long as it's there and it's adjustable? Well obviously there are differences between free weights and machines, but speaking of what builds muscles, it's resistance (and rest and food, etc.). So, why couldn't he take a pair of bands with him? They offer resistance, don't they? Can't you adjust that resistance by holding the bands in different places or perhaps using different numbers of them? Sure you could. Ah, but there exist certain movements one is not able to perform with the bands. Of course! But really those movements can be done with just about anything you can pick up. Why not sandbags? Why not using isometrics instead? Why not take a towel, wrap it in your hands, and use your own body as reisistance?

The point is (and this is all directed towards the poster, not you), weight training is just resistance. Do what you have to do and keep trying new things. Your training doesn't need to involve barbells, dumbbells (and especially machines) to be effective. It just needs to offer adjustable resistance that can be cumulative to the point of effectiveness. This is why bodyweight training isn't as effective as weights in some respects - there is only so much resistance. Similarly, one could probably argue that weights are not as effective as isometrics because it forces you to use absolutely maximum contraction, and even then the resistance doesn't budge.

Okay, enough rambling. Perhaps I got a little off topic, and I apologize. But I think you see the point...

you mean those big rubber bands the soccer moms use in their aerobics classes?? you are joking, right?

There is absolutely no way elastic bands could ever provide as good of a workout as free weights. I would rather just take a break when I travel than carry some freakin rubber bands around with me and waste my time with that.

Oh, so the bands Westside uses to provide 200+ pounds of resistance when squatting are just too girly for you? Send an email to Mr. Simmons explaining that and post the reply here. I'd love to see what he says.
