I think wide grip is better for widing back. Where you from in Alabama? I was just in Mobile working the Senior Bowl. I really disliked the city. Really boring. Maybe its just that town.

From my understanding, a wider grip will bring the lats into play more, which is ideally the part in which one wants increased size in order to achieve a wider back, so to speak.

I'm from Shannon, which is an outskirt of Birmingham. Birmingham is about 5 hours north of Mobile. PW, I used to hit the clubs her in town in my younger days, but I have a 6 year old now and he keeps mom and dad at home.
Both work and it really just depends on the individual. Just make sure you keep the palms facing each other when doing the close grip version.
Wide grip dude with palms facing away from you.
This works the higher part of the lats and all the way to the
middle of the back. Better upper spreads.
Narrow grip with palms facing you works more bicep and the long
part of the lats.
Best results are both though.![]()

.37 @ 182 lbs
.33 @ 198 lbs
Isolating the upper, middle and lower pecs (chest)
same with lats

I agree. Do both. I like to alternate pullups/closegrip chins each set. Hell you may even want to throw in some parallel pullups.

Since it is a complex movement utilizing multiple muscles, maybe with
the narrow grip, you are using 80% bicep 15% lats and 5% rhomboids.
Whereas with the wide grip you are using 40% biceps, 50% lats and
10% rhomboids. (all %'s are for example only)
So using narrow grip, your biceps give out before your lats get much of
a workout. Whereas, using wide grip, your lats get a much better workout
before the weaker muscle group (bi's or lats) give out.
More muscle workout equates to more growth.
Anyhow, that is my humble opinion.

Yes, your point is well taken. My problem was with the statement where you said "work the long part of the lats" or whatever you said. You definitely shift emphasis among different muscle groups by using different grip width and orientations of the humerus.Originally Posted by milliman
