    What exercise to do?

Using free weights, what exercise targets the muscles under your shoulder blades to the sides of your back?

I used to go to the gym where my back seemed to be pretty big, i stopped going and got some free weigths but those muscles stopped developing as much. I think it was from not doing cable rows maybe?

An exercise that works the muscles of the upper back and posterior deltoids ...can be used with a lat pulldown machine and a straight bar or leather tricep strap.

Stand in front of the pulldown machine with your hands on the bar wider than shoulder width apart. Stand back and pull the bar to your face while keeping your elbows out. Try to contract the muscles of your upper back for a couple of seconds before returning to the starting position.

if all you have is DBs

    bent over rows (bilateral)
    single arm bent over rows
    bent over rear delt flyes

you can do face pulls with Dbs, if you lie face down on an inclein bench (provided you have a bench to lie on).
