I'm going to be starting a training program. I just want to add some muscle and some strength. I haven't gotten my routine together yet but I only have about 1 hour a day to workout. Is that enough time?
Am I better off training 1 specific muscle group a day or are full body workouts the way to go?

yes an hour is enough just as long as ur not talkin that much just get in lift get out![]()
cant get a full body in an hour, go with split routines. Like upper/lower or push/pull/leg.
I spent less than an hour 3-4 times a week in a horiz/vert/leg split. horiz, skip, vert, skip, leg, skip, skip.
I spend about an hour total per workout and that's only because I have to teach my brother what to do, make sure he's doing it right, and wait for him to complete the exercises as well. Mine probably take a maximum of about 25 minutes every 3-4 days (not that I'm average though; I'm actually quite crazy with my training style).

Isn't the biological cut-out around 90 minutes? Damn if I can remember why...something to do with the phosphagen system.Originally Posted by P-funk

Rarely more than an hour.
I actually find it funny how people who don't workout think those that do generally spend half their life in a gym. When ironicially, only 4 dedictated hours a week will produce amazing results. You know the same time it takes to sit your ass on the couch and watch 4 episodes of battlestar galactica.

Actually the figure of 47 minutes comes to mind and for the same reason (yet I also only remember it was something to do with the phosphagen system).Originally Posted by DOMS

It all depends on a lot of things though. I mean, what are you doing for the time that you are training. I know Mike Boyle's athletes train in 2hr clips....now, is that overtraining? Well, they are athletes on the eliete level...how long do their practices typically run? Plus, what are they doing that whole time? 20min of activation warm ups and movement drills.....weight train, maybe some agility work prior to the resistance training, stretching, etc....lots of stuff needs to be accomplished. Also, some powerlifters may train longer that 60min in order to allow for longer rest intervals between their lifts if they are maxing out. So, it is all relative. Obviously, you couldn't go balls to the wall, non-stop, 100% effort, lifting weights for 2hrs. Something has to give when you are training that long.

How about Power Week (P/RR/S) doing 4-6 reps, 18 sets, with 4 minute rest intervals? That's about 90 minutes.

I remember 47 minutes from Larry Scott.

I'm sure age and individual genetics play a role, so these figures are good for rule of thumb only. Your individual workout should also play a factor, there is a difference between 25 pound dumbell curls and 600 pound squats.

You can certainly perform a full body routine in an hour. I used to get mine done in about an hour. The actual lifting part of my workouts are usually about 60-70 minutes, although I also do about 10 minutes of dynamic warm-ups and another 15 minutes of stretching at the end. The total is around 90 minutes. That doesn't mean that you have to though.Originally Posted by Tier
