How do you do a deadlift?

Because my back workout lacks in depth, i thought of trying deadlifts. Only problem is i dont really know how to. For instance, when bending over to pick up the barbell, your back should be straight right? Secondly, are your legs suppose to be straight or do you bend them a slight bit. Also, i tried what i thought to be proper deadlifts with moderate weight and it kept knocking into my legs. So if someone could help answer these questions it would be much appreciated.

There are tons of good sites with very descriptive technique and videos which I'm sure you'll run into... Some of the key points that were pointed out to me when I started them was to:

Ofcourse, keep your back straight as possible, look up slightly when lifting to keep this natural. You also want to keep your lowerback solid and what works for me to do this naturally, is to inhale and hold and the start of the lift, exhale on top, inhale and hold on the way down.

Keep the bar as close to your body as possible. This takes practice with a low weight to get a fluid motion to pull it from the ground and past the knees without knocking. You will get a few scrapes from the bar.

So many cries of inequality stem from one of group
of people doing little or nothing and then bitching
about another group that actually does something
    to improve their lives.
