From what I understand, they're used when you using massive amounts of weight at typically low reps.
EG, in worlds strongest, when doing the squatting, they use wraps on their knees, and I think this helps that from dislocating/popping out of place. |

They also let you move more weight. At the same time, they lead to a lot of added friction on your patella.
There are also wraps that are merely heat packs and keep the joints warm but don't offer any form of support. |
