From what I understand, they're used when you using massive amounts of weight at typically low reps.
EG, in worlds strongest, when doing the squatting, they use wraps on their knees, and I think this helps that from dislocating/popping out of place.

Wraps, around the calves, knee, arms.. I see many of the dedicated utilizing them.. what purpose do they serve? Muscle warming, support? Are they recommended? Do you use them?

They also let you move more weight. At the same time, they lead to a lot of added friction on your patella.
There are also wraps that are merely heat packs and keep the joints warm but don't offer any form of support.
The only time it's bad to feel the burn is when you're peeing...
