Buy a squat rack. I purchased mine used for $70.

Once you have a squat rack, give the weightlifting style a try. It's much more challenging than the crossed arms style.

Or just stay in the weightlifting style after you clean it, and when you put it down use a controlled drop.
If sense were common, everyone would have it.

I know I can't clean enough to challenge myself in the front squat. I could also never put it down gently enough from that position either. If he has bumper plates it's a different story of course, but something tells me he doesn't.

Yeah, just buy squat stands or go Squaggle's method and buy a couple of sawhorses. Or, even better, buy both so you have a nice, cheap, sturdy, and effective power rack.

arent sawhorses too small? or do u just squat down to 'rack' it or something? is a power rack better to buy than a squat rack - looks like u can do more stuff with it

Well sawhorses would be perfect, really. You could start the movement from the bottom like I do for more of a challenge. In addition, you can buy steel sawhorses adjustable in height that each hold 1,200 lbs from Home Depot for like $20 or something. Using these, you can start from the bottom and go as low as possible - just set it at a comfortable height and there you go. As CP said, the best option is to get both.

Homedepot.com has some that are $20 a pop (You need 2). You can see what they look like in Squaggle's gallery.
