    Thumbs up Personal Trainers

    What's the best way to pick a personal trainer? What should I look for? What are warning signs that this person is not qualified? and What exactly should a trainer do in a training session? How often would I need to train with someone? (I don't want to spend more than I need to )

    I think a personal trainer is a great idea for a beginner, I'd use one for say 10 sessions or untill your comfortable with the exercises they are giving you and understand what each one does.
    Things to look for, well I've never had a personal trainer but I've been around many at the gym I go to so I'm sure others here will be able to give you some good tips.
    I'd ask around where you lift and see what others that have PT say about them.

    I think a good indication that a PT knows what their doing is by how their physique looks.

    Also, you could ask for references, such as past clients, or current.

    They should have a certification such as as ACE, ACSM or ISSA.

    "Make sure your trainer has some kind of degree in the fitness field or a certificate from a nationally recognized organization.However, just because someone has a piece of paper doesn't necessarily mean they are a good trainer. Make sure that along with their degree or certification, there as been some kind of practical "hands on" training in the gym.

    Ask yourself these questions... Was there any fitness testing preformed? Were you asked to fill out any kind of profile sheet? If not, were you asked about your lifestyle and eating habits?

    Scotty's right I would use one until you feel comfortable on your own and ask around too... The cost around here ranges from $25-75 per session.. Of course this depends on the duration of the session too...

    I used one when I was starting out. I used the job interview approach and chose the one who seemed able help me reach my goals without telling me what my goals should be. I only signed up for 3 sessions and was pleased with the help.
