I think a personal trainer is a great idea for a beginner, I'd use one for say 10 sessions or untill your comfortable with the exercises they are giving you and understand what each one does.
Things to look for, well I've never had a personal trainer but I've been around many at the gym I go to so I'm sure others here will be able to give you some good tips.
I'd ask around where you lift and see what others that have PT say about them.
