squatting

Is squatting bad? I've been working out for about 8 or 9 weeks and once a week i squat. My knees are beginning to hurt though. Nothing very painful but i dont want to injure myself. Is this normal or do I need to be careful. What are different things I could do to ensure safety.

squatting is good.

1) how is your form?
2) what else are you doing for leg work?
3) how much squatting are you doing per week? per workout?
4) are you also playing lots of soccer?

My form is pretty good i would say. I only workout my legs once a week. For squats I do three sets of 10, 8, 6 or sometimes 12, 10, 8. I also do leg extensions, calf raises, and leg curls before or after. Before when i did leg extensions i felt fine but today my knee kind of cracked a little when i did them. Right now i am not playing much soccer due to the weather but will begin to soon.

a) stop doing leg extensions.
b) start working your hip extensors at equal volume to your squats...start doing some SLDLs.

leg extensions are horrible for the knees; i won't go beyond about 150 and now only use them as a pre-exhaust.

I don't do leg extensions anymore, but they never used to bother my knees . Lots of cardio seems to get to my knees more than anything.

Interesting but a good point nonetheless, cardio's another kicker. Anything that puts pressure on my knees I avoid.

Exactly. Balance man, balance. Your hamstrings need to be up to par with your quads.

Squats, Front squats, and leg press for your quads. (Not all the same day though, need to balance it with hamstring work !!)

Other variations of squats like Bulgarian squats and split squats are good too. Lunges are always good. Also, slightly more hamstring dominant compound movements like stepups and deadlifts certainly do the trick as well.

Aren't Bulgarian and split squats pretty much the same thing, except on bulgarian you have your non-pressing leg on a bench?

Yeah, essentially. It is different though because your back leg can't do shit in terms of stability Bulgarian stance. The split squat gives you and advantage there because you can actually use the back leg for balance like in a lunge.

There's one way to find out. Stop doing them for a month BUT DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING ELSE IN YOUR LIFE and see if the pain goes away.

You're about to go snow skiing, and someone mentions to you that skiing is bad for your knees. Does it stop you?

What this means is that when we drop a ball and it falls to the ground, it wasn't the ball that moved (down to the ground), but the ground that moved (up to the ball)

Yes. What else do you do for legs? Try deadlifts, leg press, etc. Mix it up. You should know if your legs are getting bigger.
