How do you work out the ass w/out it looking bigger?

I'm a skinny person, hard gainer in the upper body, but I seem to be genetically predisposed to have a butt and legs that are always a little bigger proportionally to my upper body. Can anybody tell me the best way to reverse this? If I work hard on squats and lunges and similar exercises will this make the muscles grow and my butt look larger, or should it make it firmer and smaller? Is running long distance or short distance better for this (long seems bad b/c it will kill my upper body gains)? I'll admit I've never really "stuck with a program" focusing on my ass because it wasn't that big of a concern before, so i don't really have any way of observing what has worked.

You could just do maintenance workouts for your legs. That is, don't progress in terms of weight or repetitions. You probably won't grow much. However, I would try to get other opinions if I were you. People you can trust to give you honest opinions. I hear stuff like this all the time and most people are just being overly critical of themselves.

When you grow in proportion, I don't think you would notice your ass being bigger, because everything else is as well.

    Clenches
What this means is that when we drop a ball and it falls to the ground, it wasn't the ball that moved (down to the ground), but the ground that moved (up to the ball)

"Squats aren't so much a leg exercise as they are a gluteus maximus movement. It's best to substitute hack squats for standard squats or you'll wind up with wide hips and a big ass!" - Vince Gironda

Personally I favor a combination of front squats and hack squats for legs. If you have a big ass I'd avoid back squats like the plague. When you do a squat movement, try it with your legs closer together.
