Do you have access to a gym? It might be more convienent than buying weights. Dumb bells are good, and so are all other kinds of weights, they all have their place. I get the idea that you know little about weightlifting and training(no offense so did I at one point). I recommend that you read the stickies at the top of the training forum and check out these sites for execises and movements.

As for buying dumb bells are what weights you should purchase...there isn't really a straight answer. There are so many movements you can do with so many different levels of weights should use. Again, a gym might be better.

buying dumbells may seem like a good idea to you...but its not that efficient unless you have no access to any gym. And if you are knew to fitness there is nothing wrong with that, im knew just started couple months ago. No one told me how to do anything, you just learn by watching them. its neat cause i can no perform some of those exercises at home.

Most of the people in my gym perform movements shitty. So I recommend not trying to learn things by watching others do them.

yea your right. Sometimes they do, most of the times they dont. There should be athlete therapist or someone there to help. she helped me with most of the basics.

I started off with just dumbells, and they worked (and still do) for me. Theres so many exercises you can do with them, i think theyre great for beginners. Once you start to learn more about lifting and your own strengths and weaknesses, just buy more equipment.

Or go to a gym, where they have all the equipment on hand :P.

This place is an excellent place to learn. I wish id been a member here when i was just starting, because id have saved myself a lot of time doing useless training.

When you say you just want to be in shape, do you mean to lose some body fat and increase your strength a little bit? Because that can certainly be accomplished with just bodyweight exercises. If you want to gain a decent amount of muscle mass, then you will definitely want to gain access to some iron though.

Can you provide us with your current stats and an example of a physique that matches what you would like to achieve?

I agree with CowPimp about the benifits of bodyweight exercises. In my opinion bodyweight exercises are a great way to figure out how your body works. The problem isn't if you should buy DB or get a gym pass it is about learning from someone who is qualified and knows something about the proper mechanics of lifting. Some of the worst people to learn from go to gyms bcause like you they just showed up and started to mimic what other people were doing. If you learn to lift your own weight through: pushups, dips, pullups, chins, handstands, hindu squats, stepups, crunches, knee ups and bridges you can build a very strong base, which when you are young or just starting out is very important. I'm not saying gyms are bad, they allow you access to a lot of machines and equipment that can be useful and fun to use, but when you just start out you won't need 3/4 of what they have to offer.
But like everyone says: it depends on your goals! What do you want to accomplish? If you just want to increase your strength then bodyweight exercises can easily help you out with that, but if you want to gain a lot of size you could sign up for a complimentary "tour" of your local gyms facility and stick to compound exercises like squats, shoulder presses, flat bench press, curls, DB deadlifts, DB rows, standing calf raises, dips. Just start SLOW and LIGHT until you perfect your form and warm up with 5- 15min of cardio to get the blood flowing. There is a ton of advice on this site for how to develop great routines for beginners so read and inform yourself so you don't get hurt. Working out is a lot more fun when you know what you are doing and you start to see results! Keep it real!
