Deadlifts - specifics on technique

I started using deadlifts (occasionaly with straps) at the end of my back session and I really enjoy doing it.

When doing deadlifts, does it work the entire back or really just the lower part?

Also, does grip width make any difference?

Thanks for the input!

I love it when a plan comes together.

I find that deadlifts use your lower back and all the way up your spinal erectors and trapezious muscles.

the deadlift is excellent for the entire posterior chain. It really hits the upper back hard in an isometric manner and the lower back in a concentric manner along with the glutes and hamstrings (the hip extensors). A good all around lift.

As far as grip goes, a shoulder width or slightly wider is the most common. If you move your hands really far out this would be called a snatch girp deadlift (do this with an overhand grip). This is a lift that would be more specific to one doing olympic lifts but it is strting to make its way into others training programs because it is very challenging on the grip and upper back to hold position. As well as you have to start your pull from several inches lower then where you would with a more common grip because the grip is so wide it decreases trunk angle. This would be called pulling from a defecit, which could also be accomplished by pulling off a platform or standing on a box and deadlifting a bar off the floor. This really hits the lower back hard. I like the snatch grip deadlift because it really takes lots of toughness to hold the bar with a grip that wide.

Agreed. Snatch grip deadlifts are hard as shit. I make myself do them on occasion, but it is hard to set aside my ego on a lift like the deadlift. Snatch grip deadlifts are great for your grip strength too, wow.

Yeah, I probably should. I'll implement them a bit more into my next cycle.
