Medial/Lateral dumbell raise question

I normally do standing medial/lateral dumbell raise but after watching some old video of Bill Pearl, he was performing single arm medial raise whilst leaning side ways on a bench at 45'.

Would this be more beneficial or would it simply provide some variation?

Thanks!!

I love it when a plan comes together.

I think it pretty much just uses the same concept as incline DB curls.
Since the maximum effort is at a lower point in the motion, you can strengthen the part of the motion in a DB raise that gets neglected

He was doing that because it strengthens the supraspinatus (A rotator cuff muscle). The supraspinatus assists in shoulder abduction, but it is really only active for the first 30-40 degrees of movement. When performing a regular lateral raise, the peak level of resistance is right at the top of the movement when the supraspinatus is not assisting to a large degree. If you lay on your side (More common for this application), or lean on your side like Pearl, then you are imposing more resistance in the portion of the range of motion that the aforementioned rotator cuff muscle is active.

Well that's my guess anyway. I can't guarantee that's what he was thinking, but the information I presented is true.
