Functional Lifting = Life
|
I get this after heavy farmers walks. It's a little like being bent over for a long time doing something annoying (such as stocking a shelf at an annoying height) and then having it hurt for a minute or two when you stand up. As far as I know, it's common and nothing to worry about. I actually have to uncurl my fingers using something else (like pushing them against my legs) after my farmers walks.
Push yourself. Enjoy yourself. Be yourself.

Happens to me when I do static holds. I slap my fingers to get them back to normal quicker.

You may have totally sucked up the ATP supplies in the muscle fibers in your hand/forearm. A similar effect takes place in corpses after death; this is called rigor mortis.
You see, the functional contractile units of a muscle, called sarcomeres, contain two filaments that make up the cross bridges that allow for muscle contraction: myosin and actin. There are myosin heads that dock into sites in the actin. When the myosin chains twist, called the power stroke, it pulls on the actin filaments and causes the muscle fiber to shorten. After each power stroke, an ATP molecule has to be hydrolyzed in order to break this connection. If there is no ATP, then the connection remains and the muscles will remain at the same length. I have no idea if this is what caused it, but it's certainly a possibility. It takes around 5 minutes to fully replenish ATP stores (Which is why long rest intervals are recommended when training for maximal strength). Plus, I wanted to take this opportunity to rehash some information I just learned in my anatomy & physiology class that will probably be asked on a test in a few days, heh.

Were you hydrated? I remember that happening to me once when I was on a combat patrol in the middle of the dessert. I was losing a lot of water from sweat and wasn't replenishing enough of it I guess. The Corpsman told me I was dehydrated.

I find that happens to me some nights at work.. I walk out and my arms are still tight and it takes me a while to even get my keys out to open my door.. I was told it was due to the lenght of time I hold a postion and how tense I keep them , needing to move more and get the circulation going in them.
Question..can you drink too much water? I really dont drink anything else so I am curious .

thats an odd question too...i dont think anyone can have 2 much water... because if you did, it'd just be urinated out.. so there cant be any excess water if you know what i mean...
chillout.... i dont think its a MAJOR issue... if it happens again, then m-a-y-b-e.... but i doubt it will.... like GirlFred said, its all about circulation... |
