Oddly enough, the people I see around the gym using gloves are those cats who stay in the nautilus/mat area. None of the hardcore lifters who spend 90% of their time in the freeweight area use gloves. I do see alot of straps, but not gloves.

I wear them for most of my workouts. I play guitar and I need my hands to be in good shape. Plus I'm not so stupid to think my manhood is justified by whether or not I wear gloves. Unless there is a good reason not to wear gloves, I'll keep wearing them.

Nah, i used to wear gloves at my old gym just because the barbells they had, had these sandpaper like grips on them and it made my hands feel like burning.

But i use these when i do shrugs.

Let me describe the perfect date: I take her out to a nice dinner. She looks amazing. Some guy tries to hit on her... now he wants to fight - so I grab him - I throw him into the jukebox! Then the other ninja’s got a knife, he comes at me, we grapple, I turn his knife on him. Blood on the dance floor. She’s scared now. I take her home. I’m holding her in my arms. I reach in for a kiss... I hear something in the leaves, I flip her around, she gets a poison arrow right in her back. She was in on it the whole time... but I knew...

Not to sound stupid, but I do use gloves for some...Benchpressing is the main one, though. The bar has like a metal "sandpaper" grip area like someone mentioned before. It would probably cut and scrape my hand, which I uh...use for video games...no, seriously, I use them on olympic bars with the sandpaper areas.
Well, I won't say my stats right now, because they're actually pretty pathetic. I used to workout years ago, but it was on and off anyway.

I have been lately to let my hand heal because I've ripped open a callus that's started bleeding a couple different times... However, I prefer not to, and I won't once it's healed.

Is it just me, or is the 'sandpaper' to actually help you grip it? Hmm... Interesting concept, I know, but I think I may have stumbled upon the solution to one of life's great mysteries: Is the 'sandpaper' on a barbell to help you grip it when lifting heavy weights, or just an evil plan hatched by the makers of skincare products to increase sales?

    Sorry, couldn't resist.

you know there isnt anything wrong with gloves. there is a couple reasons i wear them.
    1) It doesnt hurt me lifting weights with it, but when its really heavy weights it hurts the hands.
    2) It looks good
    3) I can do more heavier weights for more reps then without it.

But it feels really good when you take em off and lift some weight too

Toughen yourselves up and ditch the gloves. Trust me, you'll enjoy the lifting once you've adapted.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain...

I see no need to. I'm getting straps after today's incident in dead lifting. My forearms completely let go when i know i had 2 dead lifts left.

That's one reason why I believe gloves are not a good thing (in most cases). Why not do away with them and increase your grip strength? Everyone could use more grip strength IMO.

To be honest, I find it MUCH easier to get a solid grip WITHOUT gloves. Gloves just put an additional layer between your hand and the bar, which makes gripping more difficult.

For some people, though, pain can be a factor: Perhaps the grip is good enough that their skin slides off with heavy weight (happened to me once). Also, gloves are, IMO, superior when moisture is a problem. Of course, a little chalk and bare hands is preferred, but if there isn't any chalk around, gloves are much better than my hands with moisture in my experience.
