Your question should be more like "what don't they help", I think deads are the best exercise there is for the whole body.
Here's a list of muscles they hit:
Target
Erector Spinae

Synergists
Gluteus Maximus
Adductor Magnus
Quadriceps
Soleus

Dynamic Stabilizers
Hamstrings
Gastrocnemius

Stabilizers
Trapezius, Middle
Trapezius, Upper
Levator Scapulae
Rhomboids

Antagonist Stabilizers
Rectus Abdominis
Obliques

Plus its said that exercises like deads and squats help to realise growth hormones that the whole body will benifit from.

What can I dead, well I did them the first time yesterday with the bars set just below my knees and did 495 for 3 reps. I started doing them about a year and a half abo and probably started with 135lb

Start light and get your form right.

Cool

Is what what they're called??

First time for me, normally I go all the way to the floor and then back up but was reading that doing so just hits the hip flexors more and that lowering it just past the knees was just as good.

I dunno about using the smith for deads. Personally, I don't use it for deads or squats, as you're locking into one plane during the lift.

I don't see any benifit using the smith for deads over just using the straight bar.
The only possible benifit is that the bar wouldn't roll out of your hands (the one at my gym only rotates so far)

I wouldn't recommend using a Smith Machine for deadlifts...the Smith Machine has no give front to back and puts your lower back in jeopardy at several points along the lift if done improperly. Stick to a free bar and your results will be much faster and not wreck your erectors.

Scotty is DEAD on. Deadlifts are the bomb. They target every muscle in your back and heavy deads hit just 'bout everything else too. The GH point is also correct.

I just added them back into my routine two weeks ago. On Tuesday I did 365 x3, but that should go way up in short order.

If I could only do 3 exercises, deadlifts in a power rack would definitely be one of them! They are awesome for building overall power and mass. They have changed the look of my back comepletely since I started focusing on them. I have a serious love/hate relationship with deadlifts!

I love deadlifts. Of course I never do them without a spotter. Don't want to hurt the back. I think I do OK for a female. Right now I do 95lbs at 10 reps. My back is probably the most defined because of these. You feel it in the butt as well.

Form question ...

Quote:

What exactly is the best way (if there's a single best way)
to spot somebody when deadlifting ?

Personally, I just like people to be at a comfortable distance when I'm hoisting *cough* heavy *cough* objects ...

I'm trying to visualize it, but I'm not seeing it ...

The best advice I can give on proper form is to ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS do them in front of a mirror and NEVER, NEVER, NEVER let your eyes lose sight of your eyes in the mirrior. By always looking at your own eyes in the mirror you will keep your head up and therefore your back will stay straight which is the proper position. The most severe injury I've ever gotten in the gym was by doing dead lifts improperly. I knew better but just wasn't paying attention and on a stupid warm-up set I rounded over my back and ended up tearing a spinal erector. That was in 1997 and I'm just now getting back to using the same weights I was back then. I did deads this morning, 445 lbs for 5 reps. I'm just as sick as Baboon, I love deads!!!

Preacher, I've never heard of spotting on deads. I guess you could stand in front of the lifter but that would negate the advice I just gave. If you can get, get it. If you can't, drop it.

Rules? You mean we have RULES for that???

Thumbs down

Spotting on deads...never...if you can't lift it, just drop it...too much chance for injury...
