Toning is a result of decreasing body fat or increasing muscle mass. So, I would suggest lifting using parameters geared toward hypertrophy. Check this thread (Guide To Designing A Routine) out for more information on that subject.
At the same time, I would get my diet into gear (Guide to Cutting, Bulking & Maintenance). If you are brand new to resistance training, then I would suggest eating maintenance level calories or in a small positive energy balance to allow your body to recomposition. You will most likely lose some fat and gain some muscle mass. However, once you get a few months into training this will become nearly impossible and you will have to shift your focus to one goal at a time. |
