Depends what you mean. Does using weights work...for what? What do you want out of it?

If you want to get visible abs, then no it wont work very much at all. If you want to increase core strength, then yes it will help.

Train abs just like you would any other muscle. Dont overtrain them. I only do 3 sets per week, if that, on abs. Mainly because they do get worked in many other exercises to keep you stable.

Any ab work i do is just to increase that stability as i begin to lift heavier weights in my other exercises.

Exercises, eh. Variations of crunches are the most tried and tested method i think, and ive never really had the inclination to do anything else. Crunches, reverse crunches, and cross-crunches always serve me just fine.

    Hope any of that helps.

I think weighted ab work is great. There is no reason to perform all endurance training for your abdominal muscles.

I don't think direct training of your abdominal musculature is necessary, but it is justified in some situations. For example, I do a little bit of hip flexion work to balance out all the hip extension that I do in my program.
The only time it's bad to feel the burn is when you're peeing...

For my ab workout i do 1 set of 15 reps with an extra 5KG for crunches and reverse crunches, then just do endurance for obliques (because who the hell wants a massive bulky waist?).

Doesnt seem like much, but if you do the reps with a slow positive and negative while holding for a second in between (3-1-3?) over the whole set it usually gets me writhing around 12 reps :P.

Just try things out, i dont know what level youd be at obviously, youre different to me.

Weighted hanging leg raises are in my opinion the most effective ab exercise.

Hold a dumbbell or mediciene ball between your feet.

Then do the leg raises.....search for the hanging leg raises on site or google.
