    How long can HIIT session be before muscle catabolism is an issue?

    If properly implemented, a session of HIIT cardio shouldn't last more than 20-25 minutes. If it's possible, then the intensity of the session needs to be raised. The question is therefore moot.
    The only time it's bad to feel the burn is when you're peeing...
