I have used the smith machine for this exercise before. In fact, I did achieve nice results from it, but then I switched to free weight barbells. However, dont let that fool you cuz I switch up everything basically.
I think I am considering doing this particuliar workout again this week! |

The Smith is a great machine if not used excessively...period.

yeah squats on the smith are bad , not good at all i stopped doing them they increase the potential of having an injury too also the increased weight u will use will be taking off by the machine itself so u won't benefit that much ,, but i like the idea of doing calf raises on the smith this is a gr8 idea we don't have a calf machine in the gym so i guess i'll be using this nice idea |

I like going to failure so even taking a step anywheres to get the bar back on some rack is not something I wanna deal with really. i don't see how squatting ATG makes a difference. whether you're doing them free or on a smith, that's simply correct form either way. may be more difficult on a rack if you have flexibility issues but that can be corrected. with regards to going to failure, i'm not a fan but i know many are. in that case, without a standard squat rack with safety bars, i can see the reasoning behind using the smith but i still wouldn't be caught dead on it. your call dude. |

However, I would NEVER use the smith exclusively for these movements, or any others, but only as a variation every few workouts. (Although I tend to do close grips on a smith exclusively as I feel they are superior to free weight for this particular exercise). |
