Cardio Help

I have a few questions, how long should I do cardio if I want to cut body fat and what kind of cardio would be the most beneficial?

depends on what your weight training looks like and a variety of other factors. To hard to answer the question without more info.

strange workout set up....

what about sets? reps? intensity? that is the main thing....

also, if you are training legs on friday, how hard can you train them on saturday during your total body workout? the set up is kind of weight. I would change it to something like

mon- lower
wed- upper
fri- total

For optimal fat burning you need to perform cardio at 55% of your max heart rate for at least 20-30 min 3 times a week consistently. Low intensity, high duration. To determine your low end heart rate......220-(your age)x.55 = low end heart rate. Between 55%-65% is where your heart rate should be, when you train at a higher intensity you are now training cardiovascular endurance.

It also depends on what kind of look you wish to achieve...

Bodybuilders typically do long slow duration, high volume cardio to burn fat off slowly and perserve muscle for that 'hard' look

If you are after a more overall 'fitness/athletic' look than I would do more interval style cardio....based on the set up of your training program I assume this is what you are after...?

I lean towards a mix though. Get the best of both worlds...too much Interval cardio can tear off your muscle quickly if not done properly...

good luck

I want to go for a mix between the hard and very toned look.

Yesterday I did 15 mins eliptical with my heart rate between 130 - 140 burnec around 170 calories.
Then I jumped on the bike for 15 mins at level 6 burned around 90 calories kept my heart rate 135-140. After this I went on the thread mill for 10 mill and did walking and sprinting getting my heart rate up to 170 burned around 105 calories.

This type of workout is I am guessing more toward the lean look, so I need to find a in between range.

Keep it simple:

Perhaps specify 2-3 longer slow duration workouts on your weight training days. I would aim to do your cardio as far away from your weights as possible if you want that 'harder' look but will dependon your time constraints. If you can't do two workouts a day simply tack on 30 minutes post workout weights.

And than on two other days....non-wgt training days...perform your Interval style cardio.

Hope that helps

Wait so do something like cardio in the morning and weights in the evening type of thing on my weight days and interval on my non weight days?

The only problem this month I am in school off campus so I can only get enough time to put in one workout, so should I just for now do weights then the day after do interval?

Yes.

I lean towards overall workout time under 60-75 minutes MAX. So if you can get your weights in under 40 minutes than finish off with an extra 20-40 minutes of easy cardio.

Again, this approach will work best if your goals are fat loss...seperating your workouts is better for muscle growth...

keep it up
