olympic/PL squats
Can I have a fairly detailed description of the differences between the olympic and powerlifting styles of squatting?

Olympic squats you go deeper with lighter weight. More knee bend and less bend at the hips. Power squats you go paralell with slightly more hip bend. You use lower weight during O squats too. I believe that's accurate.

The weight sits lower on your back with a PL squat. The bar rests on top of your contracted rear delts. With an Olympic squat, the bar rests on top of your upper traps.
Because of where the bar sits in a PL squat you get better leverage. PL squats are generally done with a wider stance, although how much wider does vary (Personally, I'm only a tiny bit wider PL style). Also, you typically tend to lean forward more with a PL squat; this causes more stress on the hips. |
