    Cycling Vs. Running

So I recently came down with a case of ITBS (Iliotibial Band Syndrome) on my left knee/leg, preventing me from running, so I've just started stationary cycling. I usually run about 6.5 miles in an hour, which I computed to burn about 720 calories. Today was the first day I used the stationary bike and I rode for 1 hour and 25 minutes, and rode about 25 miles, which computed to burn about 1,100 calories. I didint coast what so ever BTW, and in fact, every 5 minutes or so I would increase the tension and intensity for a minute to get my heart rate pumping hard.

Do you think I actually burned that many calories cycling, compared to running, and is it just as beneficial cardio/fat-burning wise? While I cant run, I want to be able to stay in as good shape as I am now, cardio wise, keeping the physique I worked so hard for.

    Thanx,

    MiKe

Yeah I was suprised as well when I saw that I was burning more calories on the bike than running on the treadmill.

There will be some carry over, but it won't be 100%. What are you doing to remedy the ITB situation?
If sense were common, everyone would have it.

What do you mean by carryover, and what wont be 100%. I am stretching, taking a break from running, trying not to go up or down stairs. I also got a cortisone shot on friday, which hasnt really kicked in yet, and I am starting Phys Therapy in a week or so.

He means that the cycling won't improve your ability to run faster or longer as much as running would. Basically, only some of the adaptations (The more general adaptations) that your body goes through when cycling will assist your ability to run faster, longer, etc.
The only time it's bad to feel the burn is when you're peeing...

I hear ya on that. I dont expect it give me performance gains as far as running goes. I just want to be able to stay in shape the way I am now, physically and cardiovascularly. I also hope not to lose any endurance when I go back to running. I think if anything, I'll strengthen my legs from cycling since it uses my quads a lot more than running does.

Even though the seat is decently cushioned, during and after cycling, my cocyx bone hurts a lot. I have even tried putting a towel under my butt, but I guess it just boney. Any suggestions? I noticed that the skin right by the bone is a little red/irritated.

    Thanx,

    MiKe
