    Beginner looking for help

I know this is an Iron Man forum, but I thought maybe someone here would be able to help me. I am a 19-year-old percussionist in a drum & bugle corps (its like marching band on steroids) and I have switched from played a bass drum to playing tenors. Now I've been playing tenors for 6 months, but this past weekend was the first weekend that I thought I might physically be able to carry them. This summer my corps is just doing parades but I need to be able to carry, march and play for all of our parades.

So here's my question: Is there any program that I can start that will help me carry my tenors all summer? Our first parade is May 27th and being that my corps is from Canada and I live in MI I do not have direct access to the tenors themselves and I do not own a weight set.

If you need any more info, I’d be happy to answer any questions.

i looked at google images for tenors but only found drum/saxophone pictures. the only advice i can offer is get a rock about the size of whatever a tenor is and carry that around a couple of times a week for distance. or you could use a sandbag and carry that around.

i guess the closer you can get to the shape of the tenor the better, but anything that is close to its weight should work. btw, strongman training rocks!

Well tenors are drums. I thought I should post a pic(not exactly the ones I use but close emnough). the thing is that i have a carrier, kind of like the second picture, although my carrier has a padded bar going across the back connecting the shoulders. Plus I don't think anyone wants to know how much those things actually weigh.

i have just noticed that may 27'th is your first show, thats cutting it pretty friggin close if you ask me, not much you can do in 1-2 weeks. anyhow, my advice about getting something close to the tenors in weight and carrying it around for distance 1-3 times a week is probably your best bet. it would be pretty inefficient to start lifting weights and all that when all you need is some basic strength to carry heavy stuff around for a little bit, unless of course you want to start lifting weights and all that.

Like i said before, get an object that is comparable to the tenors in weight and start out by doing this 1x/week.

pick it up and carry it say 100ft then put it down and rest for a while. do that 2-3 times. each week increase the distance or the number of sets of number of 'workouts' until you have reached a level with that object that simulates your shows (ie, if you have to walk around continuously with the tenors for ten minutes then work up to it by walking around for 1 min, then 2 min etc.)

well I don't know if I can find anything like that, but parades are not 10mins long more like an hour min. plus we carry our equipment most of the day from about 9:30am to 10pm, with a lunch and dinner break (with some 10min breaks in between). thanks for the help, I'm sure I can figure something out. I basicaly need to build up my back and leg muscles.

yes your correct about the back and the legs. Squats and deaelifts will give you the strength the necessary for such movements.

if you are interested in a full program, i suggest you check out the stickies at the top of the page and make a program based on those at which point you can post it back up on here and we will help you iron out the kinks.

I actually think this would be a great idea, though a specific exercise should also be implemented. Seeing as how you are new to the whole thing, you are going to enhance muscle fiber recruitment throughout the entire body. Usually I recommend that you start with the basics and move to more specific movements as the time comes, but you didn't give yourself much time!
