Strength Training at home vs the gym

If I were to train at which would I get somewhat the same effect that I'd get with training at the gym? Which is better and why?

free weights are all you need!

I would get free weights and a power rack. then a bench.

what I meant by other things would be:

    a sled for pulling shit
    bumper plates for olympic lifting
    chains for dragging
chains for adding to the bar for squats
    the prowler for pushing
    etc.....

lots of things for odd lifts like barrles and sand bags to carry, etc...

I much prefer working out at home to working out at the gym. If I had the space to do it still, I certainly would. You never have to wait for equipment, you can workout half naked and barefoot, you can blast whatever music you want, there is no commute, and you can customize your equipment selection.

Free weights are plenty. I made a lot of progress with the following:

    Bench
    Olympic barbell
    Olympic dumbbells
    Chinup bar

Plain and simple. I even jerry-rigged it so that I could get squat stands from my bench. Squaggleboggin has also used the novel idea of getting a pair of sawhorses to make a true adjustable squat rack for dirt cheap, which I would do if I could do it again.

So doing cardio 30 minutes a day 3 times a week and strength training mostly with dumbbells on alternate days 3 times a week along with a good diet is good enough to help me lose weight and build lean muscle mass?

If I had access to old Nautilus equiptment, I would work out exclusively at home.

From my experience, I love workin out at home much more, no hassle to drive to the gym, you can get as free as you want, yell as loud as you want, etc.

Interesting... I've found a prefer a gym, however I've never trained in my OWN home... I have a friend that has some decent equipment at his house which I've trained at, but generally I'd prefer to go to a gym. I find people don't tend to bother me seeing that I have an mp3 player on, and with that, it's easy for me to ignore distractions.

I get tired of people wakling around with their elbows bent - granted a pumped muscle naturally bends a bit but not when you do 30 minutes of cardio and nothing else. I HATE most people at the gym.

I was thinking about getting a bowflex machine and a treadmill. I dont want to join a gym if the atmosphere sucks.

I have a power rack for benching/squatting. Incline/decline bench, olympic bar, and a 300 lbs in plates, an exercise ball, 2 55lb adjustable dumbells, and a dumbell set from 10lb-35lb.

Also an EZ curl bar but I haven't used that in months.

I find if I am in a good/high energy mood I prefer to work out alone. But if I am feeling down I need a friend there so I don't lose focus.

For an experienced weight trainer, home gym all the way. If you are new to it though, I think joining a decent gym is the best choice. Not a hardcore gym, not a 'Curves', but a middle of the road gym.

Something about a gym atmosphere that really motivates the newcomer.

I have the privilege of being able to work out at home. It's great not having to travel (as in, when I want to lift, I do) or pay (except the initial investment) or wait for others. I'm sure certain gyms do offer a great atmosphere, but I don't see myself lifting if I need others around me to do it. I do it for me, not because other people around me are doing it and I'm suddenly motivated. I know what you're saying, but I don't believe it has the same effect on everyone - namely myself. I love lifting alone and I'm lucky enough to have the clearance to do overhead lifts (power snatches, etc) at the moment; however, I'll be moving soon and that will change, so I need to think of something to do for overhead lifts lest I'm forced to abstain from them altogether. Perhaps the garage will become my friend, even in the below 0 weather around here. Yikes...

Speaking of a Sled, I just had one built when foreman was here. I used it yesterday (SAT) for the first time. hell it was fun to use. The Mexican's around here thought I was a nut dragging a piece of iron, but oh well.

I've only trained in my home for the last 11 years and I really have no reason to go back to a gym. You don't need all those expensive machines to achieve what you can do with just the basic equipment.

I work out at home too. I have all free weights basically. However, I need some sort of dumbbell set or dumbbell bars because I use some shady old ones with not enough weight I found in my basement that I'm afraid will fail someday and all the weight will slide off onto by face or head. But hell yeah, I think workin out at home beats the gym anyday. The fees you pay will eventually rise above and keep rising higher than the amount you spent on equipment.
