Try These Close Grip Bench Presses

Today I thought I would try something different. Some of you may have already done these. It was a first for me. Sometimes I feel like I'm not even wworking the Triceps the way I do CG Bench. I normally space my hands about 6" apart and bring the bar down around the sterum.

Today something different. Your going to need a smith machine for these. Set the pins about 4" off your chest. Your hands will be spaced approx 16" apart. Now with a thumbless grip, bring the bar down slowly to the chin or high up on the neck. Pause for a count of one and press back up. Make sure you keep the elbows close to your side.

I guarrantee you that if you have never done these this way, you will feel the tri's once you complete your sets. Also check the ego in at the door. Subtract about 30-40 lbs (if using 6 reps) of what you can normally do on CG Benches.

That sounds like a JM press, which I dont feel is great for the elbows with reasonable weights.

With Power CG grip I do a regular bench and keep constant tension for the triceps, if trying to target them specifically. JMO though.

Yeah, that's a JM press, but on a smith machine. They are sometimes referred to as throat crushers. It's kind of a mix between a press and an extension. Good movement for the tris. I think I'm going to start using them again.

I thought the JM press was the one where you do an eccentric skull crusher and then bring the bar over your chest and press it up?

My searching shows this is a variant with the same name, although I know of the J movement you are talking about.

In all honesty I see no point in doing them, and I still see no benefit to the Tate press either (which he says he doesn't know how they got named after him).

With the wider grip, it didn't bother my elbows at all and you know i have bad elbows.

LOL...The only way for me to reply to your post is "don't make me put a hex on your stock portfolio". Hey they really worked my tri's good today. I was under my total amount lifted by 30 lbs, but felt like they received a better workout. I guess the next 4-6 weeks will tell as I will use these over my prior CG bench method.

Ive never heard of a JM press period.
Ive done the tate press though.
The way your describing the movement, makes me visualize a skullcrusher but using a smith machine and coming down lower on the head.

I've read that they recommend doing Tate presses to help you get used to "pulling apart the bar," which they claim helps to activate the medial head (I'm pretty sure the medial...) of your tricep.

Yeah, I've seen them bench press with a mini band wrapped around their arms too. I've never tried it, but it could be a good idea.

the pulling the bar apart not only makes you engage the triceps, but also makes you keep your shoulder blades pulled together and locked in.

*this is really important when you have to PULL the bar down you your chest because your triple ply shirt is so tight*

Tripple ply isn't legal anywhere that I've seen yet.
