Getting rid of fat over stomach and indeed any other place on the body, because you cant spot reduce fat:

GOOD DIET + NUTRITION.

Exactly the same for both genders.

Situps arent the best exercise for abs, but exercising them only builds up muscle endurance or strength.

Its not a waste of time, but it wont make her abdominals any more visible.

Crunches are better thatn sit-ups, but like i said, they wont do much for abdominal visibility. Just endurance, strength etc.

And by diet i dont mean stop eating, just eat properly. Cardio helps a tad, but any exercise will help just as well.

"Just endurance, strength etc."

While I agree that the visibility of abs is mostly diet, there is a visual difference between untrained and trained abs, and you can increase your abdominal musculature.

True enough, there is a difference. But i suppose that could come later, and if shes been doing situps already (though a bad exercise) they'll already have benefitted a little.

Diet is the key though . If you can see them, its easier to see if any training is working from there on out.

Yeah, and I feel that the best way to do this is to have people squat, overhead press, deadlift, etc. Those structural exercises that can you to load the trunk are highly effective in this regard.
