Do you use a trainer?
Or are you a trainer?
I am concidering hiring a personal trainer, but wanted to ask around first about it. Whats the 'norm' regarding fees? Is it by the hour normally? Do all trainers help with the diet aspect? In that case, should I look for a trainer/nutritionist? Ive only been lifting for 5 months and love the results, but I need help in with my diet. That, and I killed my shoulder on an iso-lateral low row machine back on the 15th, and I still cant lift my arm properly. My point is that I think I need help on my technique as well. Thanks in advance... ![]() |

I think it's a great idea for a beginner to hire a PT if you can afford one. It will be well worth it in the long run. If you cannot afford one try and find a experienced lifter to partner up with.
Yes, a good trainer should help with nutrition, and yes they generally charge by the hour. |

if you decide to hire a trainer make sure he/she knows what they are talking about. just becasue someone has a certification doesn't mean they really know anything.

Exactly.
At the gym I worked at the most popular trainer was also the dumbest and least educated, but because he was a good salesman, he was busy. I was the only one with any nutrition, physiology or medical/therapeutic experience, and as a result I got a lot of questions but I had to turn down business a lot of the time because I didn't feel I was qualified. Lots of people who should have had medically supervised training due to medications, heart conditions, etc. came to me and I would refer them somewhere and then another trainer would come along and take them on without being qualified to do so. Finally I had to get out because I saw lots of "trainers" doing things that could potentially harm or kill people. There is very little accountability in the PT field. Make sure if anyone is giving you advice that they not only are certified but actually know what they are talking about. Check their references. As for prices, usually they charge on an hourly or half hour basis...in Canada it can range from $40 to $80 an hour depending where you are and what level "trainer" you are with. Nutrition advice, you're probably better off going to an RD or asking the right questions of certain people around here. Just do the research and find the right trainer...there are some of us out there! |
