Whats up with my lower back?

Several months ago I attempted deadlifts for the first time and may have used improper form. Anyway I had some pain and stiffness in my lower back for the next few days that prevented me from playing bball or jogging for more than a few hundred yards. I got better and have been able to play bball/lift with no prolbmes for the last few months. However, yesterday I tried to go for a run (something I had not done since my injury) and experienced similar pain in my lower back as a result of the impact of my feet on the asphalt (running on grass was better but still hurt). The pain was such that I had to stop running and rest every half mile or so despite not beeing tired. When I rested the pain would pretty quickly go away and then come back after running a few hundred yards. Today I was able to play basketball and experience only slight stiffness in my lower back but Im sure if I were to try to go for a run again (esp on a hard surface) that I would experience similar pain. What kind of injury can I have that hurts when I go for a run but not when playing full court basketball? The sustained impact with no rest of a long run seems to bother it but the much larger forces involved in sprinting, jumping and landing in bball have no effect

does it hurt when doing any other specific movement? ie have you tried DL'ing again w/ light weight of course.

definitely go see a dr to get an all clear, when an injury gives you problems months after it happened, its reason for atleast a little concern.

I have experienced the same pain in my lower back doing deads. The MD told me that I had a slight disc bulge and put me on anti-inflammatories, such as Naproxen (which I found is the same thing as Alleve, just prescription strength). It took a few weeks to get over the stiffness and pain, but it's gone now. Just be careful doing deads; it's the only exercise that hurts my back.

I have done deadlifts and reverse hyperextensions w/ no problems since my injury. I tried them yesterday and felt some mild stiffness/soreness but nothing nearly as serious as when I tried to run.

i think you are ok , just need some conditioning focus on stretching and strengthening your core by doing compound exercises (like squats & deads) and after a couple of weeks you won't have a problem going heavy...

We can't diagnose orthopedic issues over the Internet, we can only give general advice. In your case, my advice is don't do anything that hurts your back and go see a doctor.
The only time it's bad to feel the burn is when you're peeing...

I had the same problem. I just cut out deads altogether. It took about 6-8 months until I could run again and not feel the lower back pain.

I'm not trying to diagnose anything but you can feel around your back firmly with your thumbs and if the stiffness/soreness is on either side of the spine, it is more than likely muscular pain, which could be a strained muscle....if the pain is directly on the spine or you feel some pain shooting down your leg, then it could be disc related....also try getting your hamstrings loosened....make sure you stretch them regularly if you don't already. If your hamstrings are extremely tight like mine then it's pulling on your back and that in combination with running on hard surfaces could be why it tightens up.
