    How long should it take?

I know this question might be a tough one to answer. At my peak of training/dieting i was 204, (however I usually stayed around 196-199) at 6'1'' with like low 10 bf. I applied for an internship and got the job and needless to say it basically ruined my focus on training. I am now mid 180's and I was wondering if I go back on the diet to gain mass, will it take as long as it took the first time to get there, basically is there such thing as muscle memory? Or am I going to have to take 2 months or so to get back to where I was?

PS This belongs in both, so I don't know where I should have put it.

Im not sure of the answer, but I think this will help someone else give you an answer.

Although I don't fully understand the phenomenon of muscle memory, yes, you should be able to gain it back faster this time assuming your diet and training are on point.

I don't believe there is a scientific understanding of muscle memory.
So many cries of inequality stem from one of group
of people doing little or nothing and then bitching
about another group that actually does something
    to improve their lives.

It probably took me only a few weeks, it's really my diet that killed me, I was going from 6-7 meals a day to two meals.

Sounds a bit like Tobey Maguire after the 1st spiderman film, his training went to pot and he didnt cut back his diet and got fat. The he got back in shape quickly for spiderman 2, and it seems like he's in shape for spiderman 3. So I guess muscle memory can help up to a point

Also think of it this way: youve probably learned how to train better since you first started training, right? So it should be easier to get back into shape, since you know exactly how to do it...

Muscle memory is amazing. If I start training again after a long break I make huge gains from the first 9 workouts or so. And yes, knowledge of training techniques and how to achieve focus and intensity play a part for sure.
What this means is that when we drop a ball and it falls to the ground, it wasn't the ball that moved (down to the ground), but the ground that moved (up to the ball)

I got down to 165lbs. (really lean) but I didnt train with weights for almost a year and then I went to college. I hit the weights super hard and in a matter of 7 months I was weighing 200lbs. again. Yes I did put on a little bit of a belly, but nothing bad whatsoever. Besides my measurments were almost right back to where they were 2 years prior.
