    Best "pull" exercise besides...

    ...Chin ups or pull ups?

I usually do these first in my back exercise workout, but recently have not made any more strength gains. So what would be a good substitute for the beginning of my back workout? Once that could get me over the plateau and will work upper back while hitting the biceps hard as well.

How can you row 320 for 8 reps and yet only are able to do 6 chin ups??

My guess is you have long arms. Is this true? I think pull ups and chin ups are a bit easier if you have shorter arms.

It is some fake cable row number,,,,,they never equate to free weights.

I'm still partial to good ol' bent rows. I don't feel they get enough love because they are fucking hard!

Yes I have very long arms. And the row machine in question is the Hammer Strength row machine. I think it is called the Iso-Lateral Row? The row is almost completely horizontal with the ground (no cables). And the other machine I use (which works the lats more) you are almost pulling down from an angle. I put 6 45lb plates on it and 2 25lb plates. I am at the exact strength level on both machines.

As for the chin-ups, I don't know why I am so weak on them. I only have been doing them for about 7 months, and made big gains (when I started out I needed around 80lbs of help to get 6 reps), but now I am pretty much stuck.

You're right about the cables not equaling free weights. The one cable machine that I do rows on is set at "200" when I do 8 reps.

    Chin ups or Pullups?

Also there's no way a person is going to be parallel to the floor and do super heavy ass weight with bent over rows. To much strain on the lower back. I do around 300 lbs for reps but around a 45 degree angle to the floor.

My buddy that is a power lifter gets over 300lbs and parallel to the floor. he also deadlifts 700+, so I think he can handle it.

MJH had a video on here of him pulling like 625 at age 21 at a little over 200.

I remember Chris Mason had a video of him pulling 625 or so as well.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to underestimate a 700lb deadlift...but that's my strongest lift, and I keep getting better at them...I can pull 455 pretty good a couple times and this is the first time in my life (used to have lower back pains until pretty recently) that I've been able to deadlift semi consistently...now it's a weekly thing, it's by far my favorite exercise.

You will most definitely have to put on quite a bit of weight to pull 700 though. 700 at your body weight is probably a world record or very close to it. The road to 700 is pretty fucking crazy. You will also have to start training specifically to raise your deadlift; that is, you will have to train like a powerlifter.
