This is the basic template...I'm gonna tell him to do 12 rep sets for the first 2-3 weeks. Once he's sure he's in form I'm gonna tell him to periodize in this manner:
Week 1: 3x6-8 reps
Week 2: 3x8-12 reps
Week 3: Superset exercises on the same movement plane. 3x10

It looks pretty good, but make sure that he has the work capacity to handle that kind of program right out of the gate. That's a lot of compound exercises and it is going to be quite demanding. If he has no athletic/exercise background, then I might cut out some of the exercises or reduce the volume of each to start. Really, so he learns the motor patterns more efficiently, I would go with the former.
The only time it's bad to feel the burn is when you're peeing...
