Bench Numbers Dropped!!!

I need some advice because I was trying to figure this out on my own but can't do it.

My max bench was 285 the last time I maxed about a month ago. I tried maxing today and missed at 265, but then later got 260 up. What is going on here? I know I am not overtraining, I've been on westside program for a while now(2 months), pretty much 3 day split

Monday (ME Bench day)

Wednesday(Back Day)

Friday(DE Bench Day)
I never or very rarely go to failiure on any of my reps unless I'm maxxing so I don't really know what to do! If someone got some suggestions, please share! Thanks

A similar thing happened to me, actually, almost exactly the same numbers. I think both of us just had some crazy good day when 285 came along. I know I'm not overtrained either, because my lower body numbers continue to go up. Also, for me, I lost a few pounds between my 285 attempt (I was brushing 200) now (Brushing 190).

I did 250 a few times last year, but now my max is closer to 235 and I haven't really slacked off too much or overtrained. However, I stopped caring because bench is only one of many exercises and overall I'm in better shape now. I guess what you can lift is really just an ego-boosting number and unless you are competing or trying to impress some slutty broad then who cares, right?

Even though people have mentioned diet, I kind of doubt that effected the attempt too much. The energy system used during a 1RM, the phophagen system, doesn't rely on glycogen stores for efficiency.

Good point.
Possibly a one-time deal on the higher 1RM?

Yeah, I'm kind of thinking so. Sometimes you just have one of those days where you are in the groove and you break PRs up, down, left, and right. Mental arousal is big when it comes to hitting a single for a PR. Sometimes you have the opposite, where you just go through the motions.

I had a similiar day like this, recently too, I posted up a thread about not being able to do 245lbs on incline for 3 sets of 8 reps.

The following week, I got it.

Its just a bad day. Seems to happen to everyone.

Max benching is head game IMO. I may be wrong but I really believe when I miss a max that I recently got I think it is a mental thing. In other words I bet if you were in the same frame of mind as the day you got the 285, you would have never missed the 265.

I disgaree. I think there is a physiological difference, like less ATP, less agonists, and maybe he didn't take as much caffeine or something.

There comes a point when small things make a difference. I am stronger if I am getting my sleep for a week or so regularly, maybe I had a good day for some reason, and so on.

When I was benching in the 2s, I could walk in any old day off the street and bench exactly the same as before almost no matter what.

Heh, thats what I was expecting my last bench day. I thought I was going to rep in the 3s, but I was so weak, that 275lbs gave me a run for my money. But I know it was cuz of "small things" that I couldnt get some numbers up.
