You'll get to a point where you'll understand the importance of the flat benchpress. I've never gained any kind of functional strength from an over-head press. I don't think anyone has. And if your brother can do 10 pullups, but not bench his own body weight 10x, well then he's either fat ( like me ), pre-pubescent(sp?), or weak.
I have been working out for 18 months. The only "research in the field" I have done is log on to Weight Lifting Forums and read. Yes I think if a exercise works more muscles harder than one of the big 3 it deserves to be one of the top 3 movements, why not? You are stupid if you think overhead presses will not give you strength that is functional.

I agree with Jordan as to the importance of the bench press. Definitely deserves top 3. It is one of, if not the most effective movement for upper body development and strength in my experience.

I am stronger with chinups though. I can do 7 chinups with BW + one 45lb plate, yet I can only rep my BW with bench press around 8 times.

But yes this is a stupid arument, sorry for even posting it, it was just on my mind.
    You are a fucking retard.
    Everybody benches...
But I hardly ever see people doing pull ups
You arguments and statements are absurd.
What's the point of this thread anyway?
    How does it help training?

I've been working out for about 3 years. I haven't been trying to gain weight but about half that time.

My primary goal in training is strength. Health is right behind that. I also like having a well rounded array of biomotor abilities like muscular endurance, cardiovascular conditioning, power, agility, etc.

Gaining body mass is merely a means to achieve my end. I'm actually about to start gaining weight again now, but probably only briefly. It takes an unreasonable amount of food to make me grow with my activity levels where they are. For my bodyweight, I have to consume more calories per pound than most everyone I talk to. Plus, I have no desire to be huge. I could stand to be significantly larger than I am, but I don't really care so long as I can keep getting stronger.
