I've been off for a while (about 2 years). Just signed up to Golds Gym today and did a short full body workout because I know the next couple days I'm going to be really sore.
I'm stuck on what I should be doing. My goal is to lose my gut and get a six pack, but also I'd like to add some mass.
I'm thinking push, pull, legs split (MWF), bike on tues and thurs, and do hiking/outdoors on saturday.
Can both goals be fulfilled at the same time? From the looks of things, I should either decide I want to cut and lose my belly or bulk and add some mass.
I'm currently 155 lbs, asian, 5"7. fairly high metabolism, so you can call me a hardgainer.
The diet is probably a huge part of it as well other than just working out a good program, I know. I've read the slow burning carb diet, but I don't think I'm at the point of micro-managing all I eat, so I'm just going to try to stick with 5 meals a day, no calorie counting, but eating healthy.
Sounds like you are on the right track. If you are just starting to resistance train (Or in your case, returning from a long layaway), then you should be able to gain muscle and lose fat at the same time. Try to keep your cardio sessions reasonable; I say 30 minutes a pop is good. The hiking you can go for longer I suppose. Just understand, you will probably eventually have to start doing one thing at a time (Bulking or cutting).
I also recommend counting calories. You're moving in the right direction, but if you plateau somewhere along the line then counting calories can become of prime importance. For now stick to your healthy eating plan, but don't be afraid to move to counting calories later on if need be.
The only time it's bad to feel the burn is when you're peeing...
I agree with CP. I would keep my protein high and keep calories around Maintence and let the cardio reduce the B/F while the Training add mass to you. Your lucky in a sense that you have had sometime off or this would be a lot harder to do.
I'm currently trying the same thing right now, but have to use gear to do it.
