Muscle decrease question

aside from a small/poor diet and overtraining, what other methods can cause atrophy and decrease muscle weight?

depends on severity. Obviously most injuries heal, but its dependant on the type of injury to say whether or not you will fully recover or not.

Underuse is another way, like in the case of someone who is bedridden.

I remember a few years ago I was buff as hell from all that heavy weightlifting. After that I was on vacation for about a month and I didn't do a single push-up or any other excersise other than walk and I came back skinny. So yeah, you need to make sure the muscles are in use.
