Exclamation Have you gone to a doctor for a lower back problem?

How much does going to the doc cost withOUT insurance? X-Rays/MRIs cost ..what?

Oh and which doctor do you go to specifically? A chiropractor or a sports doctor?

Are walk-in clinics a bad idea?

Besides price, what did the doctor diagnose? I mean, what problems did you have and what was recommended? And has it worked?

Unfortunately, you are going to have to go to a general practitioner (sp?) to get diagnosed. He will refer you to a specialist. You are looking in upwards of 1200-1500 dollars I would imagine after an MRI and an X-ray. I could be wrong, but I think I'm ballpark.

Definitely in the ballpark after the doc & specialists visits, X-rays, & MRI.
Having no insurance would suck.

I have always found GP's useless for diagnosing and sort of back problem. Personally any sort of back pain ( have had a bad one since get hit awkwardly in hockey at 16) I head to the Chiro right away.

Mind you our health benefits are different here in Canada. But my suggestion would be a good Chiro if you can.

Obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.

Sorry but i think my doctor told me and continually told me to stay away from any form of lifting as from the age of 17/18 as he said that i had sciatica, iam now 38.My back has always played me up so i have done what i was told too do and stayed away from any lower back exercises. In the last year i wanted a second opinion and was referred to a phisio and you guessed it sciatica never had it in the first place just very weak/tight core muscles, glutes and hamstrings, now i can squat, run,do situps all the things that i stayed away from.I was lucky as all the physio that i had done was paid by the company i work for.....

He was actually pretty helpful. He was a real young guy who had lifted in the past himself. He asked if I had any pain radiating down my hamstring from my back. He just recommended ibuprofin and stay off it till it is better, which was expected. If pain still remained he would have taken some x-rays or an MRI or something. It was funny, my back was fucked up until a couple hours before I went to the doctor. By the time I got there I could bend over and touch my toes without any pain. Before that, I could only bend about a foot down.

Thats happened before Ive gotten my back massaged.

I was asked if I had tingling or if the pain went straight down my leg. No on both counts. I have noticed though throughout stretching, that my hamstrings are prety fucking tight. Then again I have NEVER stretched them consistently before until now.

helluva wake up call.

I think sitting alot really reduces flexability in the hamstrings. I don't know for certain though.

Why do you need flexibility in hamstrings?

Tight hamstrings can exert a constant downward force on the erector spinae. Weak abs and tight hamstrings are the main culprits in chronic lower back pain. I experience lower back pain and it feels better almost instantly after hard stretching.

Also to add to what PWG said, you are more apt to injury during something like running with tight hammies. The muscle is already tugging, and when you extend the leg out quickly you could cause some damage, or so it would seem.

You guys think that doing some cardio (not balls to the wall) would be ok for the 'rest' period?

Id think so, since Ive already been doing it, but nothing worse has happened, but thats how I felt before deadlifting...

Not knowing you Back injury, I would say some walking or running could be of benefit. something where there is some sort of pelvic tilt ( assuming it is a lower back injury)

I wouldn't get carried away with the "pelvic tilting"
