I usually do them as as complex with my power snatch..
power snatch then 2 overhead squats.
it helps to set up positioning.
I also do close grip (clean grip) overhead squats to warm up....those are really hard.
These are so damn hard! Does anyone do these?
I just did some in my warm up today (with very light weight) but I have never done them on a regular basis. Does anyone have experience with these?
Should I do them with DB's or a BB or both. When I finish with my current program I was thinking of putting these in.

Thanks P, that helps me out a lot. It must super be hard to balance cg grip overhead squats!
I cannot fathom overhead squats...you guys rock.
I have seen P do them balanced on two swiss balls. The guy is unstoppable!
True Story.
I do them bulgarian style - that is, one leg up on the bench and the other does the work while holding the weight overhead. I'm a freak, I know. But I like it.

Is this pretty much a squat while holding the bar like in an overhead press?

Yes, they have a wide grip though.

I use a close grip on these because it's simply more comfortable. I always think of having my hands farther apart as being more difficult because it seems as though I have to grip the bar harder; with a close grip, the bar just kind of rests in my hands more naturally. Why is it harder with close grip as compared to wide?

1) you need more shoulder flexibility
2) with the wider grip you are increasing the base of support under the bar, and allowing yourself to balance the weight easier. With a closer grip you have much less distance betwee your hands so less distance to balance the bar between.

Ah, I see. I didn't even think of that. I should have stated that my idea of close grip is only close compared to the snatch grip. I still put my hands somewhere around the rings, so it's still farther than shoulder width by a decent amount.
Thanks for clearing that up for me, P.

I don't think most people are capable of doing overhead squats with a shoulder width grip without it falling forward a bit, unless your shoulders are hypermobile or your trunk doesn't lean forward more than 5 derees upon descent.
