Dinks who take plates off your station!

What is this friggin trend? This is the 3rd time some goof has taken plates off my rack while I'm sitting or laying there! Not cool! Anyone else seeing this? You can't take plates from my station while I'm using it just because I'm next to you ...lazy bithc. There are free stations and plate racks all over the gym. It screws up concentration having you fumble and bank my rack when I'm lifting, plus what if i want to use / pyramid the plates you took?

Another reason that I workout at home! The last time I was in a Gym (last SEP) this guy would come over to the preacher bench and change the wts on the bar, crank out a set and leave as I rested between sets. No may I, can I, mind if I work in a set, nothing.....did not even put the wts back on that I had been using.

im not trying to say your not an ass, but..

I do the same occasionally, if there are say over a dozen plates on the rack, and the next rack of plates is over 5 yards away or something. I don't touch the rack if they mid-set of course, but I would also figure they would let me know if they are working a pyramid set.

What I do with a pyramid set or dropset is lay the plates on the floor, stacked or aligned in some fashion. It gives hint towards what you are doing, enough to reserve them.

Man, at my old gym, doing any kind of super set or circuit was damn near impossible. They had a water fountain in the place, but I started taking a water bottle for two reasons.

The water fountain wasn't always cold

If you left the station, it had better be your last set.

this doesn't happen to me at the gym i train at. i load up the bar and leave in either on the olympic platform or on the squat rack and inbetween sets I put on my headphones, and I walk away. I walk down to the other end of the gym and pace around trying to focus. No one ever comes over and touches my stuff though.

The most funny thing I've ever seen was with a friend of mine.
This friend was doing Pushdowns and some other guy looks at him very seriously, studying his physique. The other guy then walks up to my friend, lowers the weight by 50 lbs, gives a nod and just walks away.

Totally cracked me up.

If I see a loaded bar I'll either ask the others in the room if anyone is using it or look around to see if someone is obviously resting in between heavy sets. It's always better to leave a towel on the bar to make sure people know it's being used and not some ass leaving weights on the bar.

What pisses me off is people who super set at peak gym times with the squat rack or power rack. There is a guy that super sets leg press and squats for five sets, and they are three rooms apart and he'll do it at 6:30pm on a Monday and freak if anyone touches either one.

Today I can do what others will not so that tomorrow I will do what others cannot.

The difference between winners and losers is that winners do things that losers don't want to do.

Gym etiquette

As an older 'lifter who has trained in gyms all over the country I learned early on, at a body weight of 160 lbs, that one needn't be a rocket scientist to respectfully ask whoever is in the area if you may take some weights, particularly when they're 100 lbs bigger.

As I got older and much bigger I found pissing on equipment like a wolf to mark my territory established me as the alpha male in one gym but got me tossed out of a couple others. And the wolf method leaves a bad smell.
I find it quite rude for people to come over and help themselves to plates in my territory, particularly knuckleheads with ear phones on. I do not like to raise my voice so I just tap them in the head with a handy 5 or 10 lb plate. That invariably gets their attention, they get a short lecture on gym courtesy and directions to the ice, for the lump on their head.

Interestingly enough, I've found that if I am lifting heavy other folks in the gym tend to give me extra space and respect. But not always. I once had a small woman get quite irate when I wouldn't let her work in on the leg press. I had 1000 lbs on it and she wanted me to unload it between sets so she could finish her gruelling workout doing a couple of 20 rep sets with a 35lb plate on each side. I told her to "piss off" and she went to the manager of this particular 24 hr Funkiness. He took one look at the weight and told her to leave me alone and do something else.

Seriously: The weight room is a very dangerous place. Two things most "health clubs" never do is teach gym etiquette, like wiping down the equipment between sets and when finished, asking before taking weights, no head sets (can't hear "Look out!" or "Get the fuck off my foot"), and putting their weights away.

I am welcomed at numerous facilities both because of my background as a successful strength coach, (numerous Olympic athletes and National Champion Weightlifters) and the fact that I will not allow any unsafe activity I see in the gym. Gym managers appreciate this because they don't want to be sued.

At 6'1" and 275 lbs. I don't have to demand respect in the gym and have found, to my amazment, that I intimidate neewbies when training heavy, so in actuallity, I correct improper behavior in a diplomatic, respectful manner using low tones and soft language. I respect anyone who shows up at the gym to do something, rather than sit on their fat ass watching the usual crap on TV, and there is rarely any need to intimidate or threaten. Usually they don't know any better and appreciate being informed in a nice way. I know I didn't know squat when I started.

When I come across someone with a sincere desire to get fit (like prep or college athletes) I will interrupt my training give free training guidence in order to get them off to a proper start. After all, I'm a coach. It's what I do...but before I could coach I had to be coached. Take a little time to pass on your experience, isn't that how you got where you are? Play it back...watching people improve under your tutelage is very gratifying.

Knowledge is power, share the power.

Ubercoach

On a couple of occasions I have run into bodybuilders doing esoteric super set routines requiring them to tie up several pieces of equipment simutaneously. They usually require a 25 lb. plate to get their attention. They do not want to share and they do not play well with others. Once I have their attention they are referred to the local steroid palace.

Well said, ubercoach. I suspect that when the guy started taking plates off my bench station yesterday while I sat there (between sets), he thought I was weak due to the fact that I had light weight racked for a standard bench press. What he didn't notice was I was working tri's with CG BP ...the dink. Hell, I was probably CG BPing his bench max! I was also alot bigger than him. The blind bat.

Another rant: Idiot trainers that think their new client is more important than you. Women trainers are the worst (friggin man haters). Last week I was doing weighted pull ups with a 50lb db (3 sets). After my first set I sat down on my db between sets (45 sec). This girl trainer walks up with a girl client and says "Excuse me we need to get in here." She then squeezes by me with her client (I had to move out of the pull up station/take my db). She then has her client do (body weight) calf raises on the frame of the pull up station (3"). First leg 30 slow reps ("pause at the bottom/squeeze at the top"). Next leg 30 slow reps. Do you have any idea how long this took? At my pull up station! AND, they were both ugly! WTF!

Older lesbian PTs are the ones that got really upset when I would mark my territory with urine or drop big weights, and have gotten me kicked out of several gyms, including the awesome weight training facility at UCSD. In my defense, my behavior at UCSD was exemplary. I made the mistake of training half the track team, and several athletes from other sports, gratis, while training several Olympic athletes in preperation for Atlanta, so in a fit of jealousy (they thought all those financially bereft students were paying me!) they had me kicked out!
None of this will be a problem when I open my own training facility.
