    Oxygen Use

Any pros out there have advice from experience on using supplemental oxygen when doing squats, leg presses, etc.

Also, as an aside - can you share some "breathing techniques" while pumping out sets? As a newbie, I find it difficult 'not to hold my breath'. Not verbally counting reps helps. Is this silly?

For the breathing i try to breathe out for the length of the positive, and breath in for the length of the negative.

Near the end of the set/exercise it does get tough though, since im usually getting a tad fatigued by then (and if its at high reps/low RIs im gasping for as much air as i can get) :P.

What is the intensity of your squats?

I mean, at a high intensity....how much breathing are you really doing anyway? Anything over about 80% and I find myself taking very little breathes, hence the reason taht the exrecise is anaerobic.

I've actually felt no need for oxygen doing squats, yet. I just remember my first experiences as a bicyclist (at age 18-21) doing heavy leg presses (6-12 reps)... then seeing stars, on the verge of passing out - most of the time.

To my memory, this was the most physical effort I've applied to anything. I got myself into a problem. How do I overcome that potential problem in the future? Is using oxygen during a heavy workout detrimental?

right, you did the exercise....THEN (after the exercise was over) you saw starts and felt like passing out.....ie, oxygen debt. This is what happens on high intensity exercises. Lift now...breathe later.

how you over come that is by working on your endurace....both aerobic and anaerobic capacities so that your recovery between exercises is better. This is why training needs to focus on certain aspects while maintaining other aspects (conjugate) as well as periods of trying to improve all aspects simultaneously (concurrent). Your training has to be phasic.

i don't know that having the O2 after the exercise would be bad. I mean, football players do it all the time after a big play or series of plays. You really should get to a level of conditioning where you don't need it though. I don't even know where you would get an oxygen tank?

Lemme get this straight....no breathing at all during heavy sets??

On almost all my sets I usually inhale on the eccentric phase....hold....exhale near/precisely at the end of the concentric phase...

On heavy sets I should hold my breath until the set is completely finished??

I didn't say no breathing all...I just meant that your energy is coming from non aerobic pathways during intense sets....so, you end up breathing more after (the fast phase of oxygen debt).

Ok, I misunderstood...you were explaining why you are short of breath after the set and not before....not saying you don't need to breathe...lol...
