Less than 20% get big

Most people do not have to be worried about getting too big when training with weights. Evidence suggests that less than 20 percent of men and very few women can develop large muscles even if they wanted to, regardless what program they follow.

I found this statement and I would like to know if anyone knows of any evidence (papers) to back this up.

That is great news, I was terrified I was going to get too big if I kept working out.

It would really be a shame if you lost your girly figure.

LOL!

Most women think if they even go NEAR a dumbell they are going to 'bulk up'.

One quite plump young woman in my gym said she didn't want to do weights as she didn't want to get big.

I had to hold my tongue as to not say "Hun, you are big already"

That's a stupid statement. Do they make guidelines as to what's considered "big" muscles? Not everyone can be a pro bodybuilder, but anyone can grow to appreciable proportions if they do the right things.

I agree, the statement sounds pretty dumb.

Done.

Thanks for the link.

It looks like a pretty geeky science type site.

They have a 'journal discussion' section.

Doesn't bode well for it being BOLLUX (which I thought it was as well)

Not in the trouser department, however, I have heard some lads say they only want to look athletic and 'tone' up.

This is the reference I was given

Peterson, P.A., Bryant, C.X. (1995) The StairMaster Fitness Handbook.

Does anyone have this book to see if there are papers listed in it?

Me. I don't want to become anything near as big as the pro bodybuilders. I'd rather be as big as or a bit bigger than most models or actors.

Say, a bit bigger than Brad Pitt in his twenties.

Shocking innit?

I agree. If the original statement actually has truth to it, then there are 'the genetically gifted' that are able to put on more muscle than the majority of the populace.

Just how the genetic cookie crumbles.

People are gifted in different ways

100% true, many guys can build a nice body but 99.9% will never build a cold 18 arm or cold 48 relaxed chest....unless they are 6'2'' or taller or have a fat 38+ gut. To be huge takes hard work and tons of drugs.

I'm the say way. About 180 lbs shredded up is as big as I want to be. I consider anything over 200 to be too big. Ugly imo.
