you have 7 months until your marathon (oct-april)

    start building your base now.

    ponyboy can help you.

goalgetter is also training for a marathon.

Lots of time to prepare, although running a full marathon with less than a year of continuous running under your belt actually isn't advisable. I'd try for the 1/2 marathon in February and then maybe a full in May/June to give yourself some extra time. There is a HUGE difference between the two in terms of distance and the effect it has on your body.

Some good websites to check out:

www.halhigdon.com (lots of training programs for beginners)
    www.runnersworld.com
    www.coolrunning.com

Giving yourself only about 8 weeks to train for 8 miles is going to be tough. If you're not running already, start with 3 times per week for 20-30 minutes in a run 10 mins/walk 1 min style to start and take one session per week to increase into a longer run (so you start with 3 miles, 4 the next week, 5 the next, etc.). Building the base is the big key so run run run and stretch stretch stretch.
Today I can do what others will not so that tomorrow I will do what others cannot.

I didn't have a full year of running under my belt but by the time the marathon comes along i'll have had 9 months worth... so far my training, going from running once a week back in april, to running close to 30 miles a week so far, has been injury-free and with consistent improvement in my speed, mechanics and endurance. It IS possible, but also, i was already in pretty good shape before starting. just didn't have an endurance base.

Awesome sites - here are a few others:

Running Shoe Prescription from Physician and Sports Medicine
    Running Network
    Runners Web
    And good ol' Active.com

TAKE THIS ADVICE SERIOUSLY. No joke!

Good sites! And of course, the 1 year of running is for mostly deconditioned people - you're a few steps up from that of course. Glad to hear your prep is going well - staying injury free is often the hardest part.

Goodluck BigE, im thinking the same as the others, half marathons first massive jump up to a full marathon.I have only done two 10ks which were at the end of last year, and have the same two comming up this year, at the moment i have one goal and that is too beat both of the times that i set last year as i hadnt been running that long. A few of my mates run full and half marathons so iam going to train with them to do a half marathon at the beginning of next year, the thing is iam really enjoying the running even when iam completly fucked and ready to throw up, funny the way the bug grabs you.......
