    Training and heart rate

I am curious if I should be at a certain heart rate from my self? Since we all come in different shapes and sizes. I don't want to over work my self when am running or riding bike. Is there a formula on which I can determine my heart rate? I am 27 yrs, 5'7", 160. Any info would be great, thanks.

generically, you can take 220-age and determine your 'max' heart rate, however, that is not always 100% accurate.

Thanks for the quick reply; I've been trying to keep mine under 160. I usually get a good work out keeping it under 160. Would there be a more accurate way of determining your max heart rate?

yea, actually try and go all out and see where you can get your heart rate to. lol.

i wouldn't worry about keeping it below 160 that much. Does something bad happen to you when you get it over 160? Do you have a history of heart problems?

Heart rate is going to elevate as intensity increases.

LOL Good one, no nothing happens past 160, just curious. I do have high Cholesterol, dieting and working out to get it down. I've been doing very well. I've lost about 10 lbs in 3 weeks. Been running walking, riding bike staying active. But most important of all am eating healthier.

I've always used the 220 - age. I have on some occassions during lifting reached the 160s. During some cardio work, I've been just at 180 - near as I can determine w/ a watch and feeling pulse.

The important thing is recovery time. Check your beat a couple minutes after resting to see how quickly it's recovered to your 'normal resting pulse'. I mentally record results.

It's about "efficiency". My waking pulse has dropped a lot since I've gotten into 'decent shape'. I recover a lot quicker from physical exertion.

Don't challenge yourself until you are ready though! I'm thinking about a "full physical" from the Doc... just to see where I stand. Important at our ages.
