    Muscle loss How long?

How long does it take before you start losing muscle mass or strength?

The reason I ask is because I missed the gym for a 2 week period and I tried to continue from where I left off. Today was chest/ tri day and I wasn't able to lift for as many reps what I lifted before and I had to lower my weights by a lot near the end of my tricep routine.

Can you loose muslce mass and strength that quickly?

Yeah, if you've taken your foot off the gas for two weeks, your bodies just gonna be on tick over, instead of constantly revving.

I think if I've been training solidly for a few weeks and been eating right and lifting heavy/consistantly, my whole body feels elevated and energetic. I'm able to lift and i'm psyched for it. I'm guessing it's becuase my body is constantly (well, a majority of the time)in a state of anabolism, with the body in overdrive producing numerous hormones left, right and centre. Stop lifting and eating for two weeks and the body will calm down on all of that. This may be scientifically incorrect and just psychological, but I judge myself on that.

I think a week off and you don't struggle too much, but two weeks or more and the loss of strength and size is apparent, especially, if you've taken abreak in your diet too. I took two weeks off to go on holiday. I went from eating seven times a day to just once (if I even managed that) and went on the lash every night partying all night and getting fuck all sleep. Even though I'd guzzled alot of booze, I'd lost eight to ten pounds in that time and my size and strength diminished horribly.

You can lose up to 20% of your strength in 2 weeks. Read it in on a westside site.

I don't think any body could lose 20% of his 1 rep max even in 2 months.... unless he's on a starvaion diet ...and that's untill he refeeds and start eating again he'll regain most of it.......2 weeks won't have any effect at all...

I will have to try and find it later. i am kinda busy at work. Yeah i agree though, I think 20% is a pretty high number to lose, but who knows.

I think in general strength loss is pretty slow but any conditioning is pretty quick to go (to a point), the bonus is it's pretty quick to return too but two weeks shouldn't put too much of a ding in strength, a lot of people are probably still gaining strength two weeks into rest if they are coming off a long time of training hard. I'm coming off two weeks now and just tryin to get motivated, I got hit by an SUV on my bike about two weeks ago and my knee was all wonky and still is to some degree... I expect most of my lifts to be about the same as here I left off and increased in some areas (and where legs are needed for strength/stability... I'll be taking a voluntary reduction for a while to make sure all is well healed).

I think you can loose it quick but you go back to where you were quick as long as the break is not too long

Depends on your diet, your training age, if you had any fitness gains masked by fatigue before taking off, your genetics, other stressors in your life, daily activities, etc. What I'm trying to say is that it's hard to quantify.

    20% is pretty high.

No way you should lose THAT much strength in 2 weeks bro. Now a friend of mine did say you can get out of shape in days when it comes to aerobic type work. (think lance armstrong, he rode the bike like everyday) So maybe you just ran out of gas and that's why the end of the workout sucked so bad?

*disclaimer: none of what I have just said in no way is based on anything scientific, it may very well be bullshit.

Sorry I meant to say up to 20%. That would be the most. I have actually had my bench go from 360 to 330 in a few weeks before, however I was sick at the time.
